I don’t recall if anyone ever described here the Category-Assignment View of GV, so ...

First, GV has three basic views: The single-window, Outline View, a Calendar View, and a Category View. (A fourth, Document View, is really just the Outline View with all but the present note hidden.)

The Category View (window) has three panes arranged like this:

MATCHING OUTLINE ITEMS

First, you create “Categories,” such as the category “Color.”
Then, you create “Assignments” for each Category, such as the assignments “Red” and “Blue” in the category “Color.”

You can add or delete Categories and Assignments at any time.

There are different ways to connect outline items to one or more categories and assignments within a category.

For example, you can just tell GV that the outline item, “Roses in my garden” should be connected to “Red” in the category “Color.”

You can also create a rule to automatically connect outline items to particular assignments in particular categories. For example, you can create a rule, “Whenever the word “Rose” occurs in an outline item, connect that item to the assignment “Red” in the category “Color.”

When you add outline items in the Outline View, you can have the rules automatically connect them to assignments using your previously created rules. You can also tell GV not to make such connections for a particular outline item.

To use the Categories and Assignments, in the C-A View, highlight a category in the top left pane. Then highlight an assignment in the top right pane. This will result in the bottom window displaying all outline items connected to the highlighted category and assignment. If you place your cursor on one of these outline items and press CTRL-TAB, you will be switched to the Outline View with your cursor on the item you selected.

Note: When you highlight a different category in the left pane, a different set of assignments is displayed in the right pane.

You can also tell GV to display (up to three) categories as columns in the Outline View . Each column will include the appropriate assignments next to the outline items. HOWEVER, the view can become very crowded!
