There’s seems to be a contradiction between some people’s assessment that XML is plain ASCII text and others’ saying that it is an extensible language that can cover anything. Maybe not a direct contradiction, in that ASCII might form its core. But to the extent that ASCII must be extended, to that extent the language will fail to be rich enough to cover everything. What’s left out? Mathematical symbols are one thing. Hierarchical and other relations among the items are another, or am I wrong? If what’s being said is that with XML you can get your data back, provided it’s confined to ASCII, and you everything else, how much consolation is that?
