Although I’ve backed off from the position a bit (as long as I can export to something non-proprietary, I feel okay), I recently had a rant about the pain I’ve felt from proprietary formats:

Also, regarding XML - it’s plain ASCII text, which we should always be able to be read as long as there are computers. So whether or not anyone cares in 30 years, they will still be able to open and read it.
I have stuff in PIM software I’ve tried out only last year that I can no longer get to; I have plain text files from 15 years ago that are still easily accessible.
