I think that the original Microsoft announcement
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2002/nov02/11-17OneNotePR.mspx supports your view of OneNote. Students are actually included as a target group and in the OneNote application scenarios presented; after all, a course could be considered a project. The main target group is clearly the “information worker”.

Microsoft says: “OneNote provides a solution for people who want to capture, organize, retrieve and reuse their notes effectively”. Though it avoids discussing potential OneNote handicaps for creating long-term archives, I think its emphasis on “notes” rather than “information” sort of gives it away.
