Dave Winer established Outliners.com. It was on a Userland server, but after he left Userland, its new management eventually stopped hosting Outliners.com. Dave eventually was able to get Outliners.com hosted on a Harvard server. I expect that Dave has little/probably no control over the server and problems that might affect it.
Further, I believe that Dave is quite busy with new endeavors, and he might have some health problems. I set up the Yahoo group as a backup site in case Outliners.com completely disappeared. I’m not yet ready to give up on the Outliners.com Web site. If things get much worse, I’ll email Dave about the problems. Dave is a brilliant, innovative guy, and I don’t want to bother him with the mundane unless it becomes a real pain.
The Yahoo Group I set up is at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/outliners-pims/ .
If you haven’t joined this group, you may wish to, just in case
Outliners.com permanently dies.
I just looked at the Yahoo group after several months of ignoring it, and find that it also has some spam. The spam probably kept it from becomming moribund, so I can’t complain too much.
Because I created the Yahoo group as a backup, I don’t presently monitor it. So, I set up some “liberal” rules for it. These are:
# Membership does not require approval
# Messages do not require approval
# All members can post messages
# Email attachments are permitted
# Members cannot hide email address
# Listed in directory
I can change these rules, so IF the Yahoo group ever takes over from Outliners.com, I can tighten the rules. However, I cannot promise to continuously monitor the group: I might go on vacation for two weeks, or at some time need another bypass.
Note that at present, if you post a message your personal e-mail address is shown. This was done 1) to discourage people from leaving Outliners.com while it is operational (I think I owe Dave that much), and 2) to make it easy for all members to “discourage” spammers.
