> I think for tons of material it is worthwhile to learn Zoot. Remember that Zoot, in addition to virtual folders, has categories. Now I’m not sure how to use categories, but someone such as Graham, who is here and at Zoot Yahoo can probably suggest how categories could become part of your information solution.
Categories in Zoot apply to all databases, and I think are probably more useful for syncing with Outlook, as the category assignments sync as well… at least that’s what I recall. I haven’t really used categories in Zoot very much, so maybe I’m missing something. Don’t forget, however, that you can also apply delimitted fields to text items in Zoot in addition to folder assignments. That allows you to create “categories” for each individual database. What I mean is, that if one of your databases requires categorization that is unique to it, you can use either a folder column or a delimitted text column to add this specialized data. A delimitted column adds the assignment directly into your item. So, for instance, if you have a delimitted column called “Price,” when you type “10.00” into that column for an item, the following text is added to your item:
Price: 10.00
Of course, this works the other way around. If you’ve set up a delimitted column called “Price” and you clip information into a new item and there is text (as a single paragraph) that reads
Price: 10.00
then “10.00” is automatically displayed in the Price column in the item grid.
That’s the advantage of using a delimitted column versus a folder column. The advantage of the folder column is that it creates a new folder each time you add a new reference in the folder column. And it then makes all existing folders (only those that are sub-folders of your column folder) available as a pick list.
Probably more than you wanted to know…
