Daly is spot on about the indexers and I’m rather bemused that people are even comparing X1 with Omea - they are really a different class of app.
What I call industrial strength indexers are the likes of X1, dtSearch and ISYS. They are powerful but not cheap.
The freebies like Copernic and Google are OK but cannot handle the large number of files or the many formats that are part of the commercial products. For example, unlike both X1 and dtSearch, Copernic could not index my 50,000 + files, nor can it index the contents of Outlook PST files.
The third class is interesting - where individual apps incorporate some form of indexing, usually of their own database or sometimes of user-defined folders and files. Idea! has an ingenious solution (which will be more fully developed in the next long-awaited release). It allows users to index the Idea! database and/or index any user defined external folder or file by calling the Windows Indexing Service. Both indexing systems are available through a common search dialogue. A neat solution, although the Windows Indexer isn’t up to the standards of the dedicated commercial indexers.
