I initially thought Omea was pretty cool, but after using it for a few days, it just ended up feeling “heavy” to me. And I don’t mean resource-intensive (though it was), but I mean that the interface felt oppressive. Just too many panes and buttons and tabs and trees and links and icons and etc.
There is something neat to their approach of automatically linking things together, but I’d prefer something with a much cleaner, simpler interface. A simple interface doesn’t have to mean less power; it just means greater usability.
I initially thought Ultra Recall was a little cluttered until I got used to it, but compared to Omea, UR is like a nice, clean blank sheet of paper.
I agree that UR and Omea are setting out to do different things. I happen to prefer the UR approach, and even the Zoot approach (I will always love Zoot even though I’m not using it at present). As for something that allows me to search existing information, I’m currently using Google Desktop beta 2.
