Omea Pro more impressions & Info

The more I play with OmeaPro.... the more I'm impressed.

Here are some random thoughts....

Having used UltraRecall for over a month....

I have noticed 1 important difference between the 2 products....

OmeaPro presents all your info and then you and organize it.... while UltraRecall requires you put the info into UR (drag&drop/enter...)

I'm not judging which is better.... only pointing out a difference.

Of course OP lets you control which information is indexed.

The more I use OP, the more I'm impressed witht he depth of the product.

One more point.... Right now OP synchs with Outlook email, contacts & tasks.... the big news is the developers are planning to add the calendar... from their forum:

"The Calendar feature is planned for the next _major_ version of Omea. Stay tuned! :)

When this happens.... there will be no need to use Outlook ;-)

I'm not saying Outlook is bad.... but you are limited to just the info that's native to Outlook. With OmeaPro I can take all the Outlook data, along with my files, web links, news groups.... and link & organize all this information together.

JJ, I got a 30-day extension on OmeaPro. First of all, since I hadn't seen version 2 before, I must say I am impressed with the development that has occurred.

Yesterday I set up some work spaces, and started to use it for email.

As near as I can see it does everything that I liked NEO for.

Will write more.

Plus, OmeaPro will pull in Outlook contact & ToDos (and Calendar next release)

I also like the fact that you can view email attachments without opening the native apps.

And... when you get boring.... you can have some fun creating rules.

If the development momentum continues...and they add an outline resource and an rtf notes resource...PowerPoint viewer... OmeaPro could become the industry leading product.

Dare I say.... Could this could be the new/next Zoot????

I only played with Zoot for a short while... needs better file handling...

What say you??? Zoot vs OmeaPro???

But in terms of a database, I cannot see anyway of actually adding data to Omea

I agree. I think this is the biggest weakness in the current version. I have posted a few messages on their forum with this concern as well....Maybe if more of us voiced this concern with the developers, we would get this functionality added sooner rather than later.

But, I believe there is a bright future for the product for the following reasons:

#1. I believe there is a good amount of development momentum behind the product. If you go to their newsgroup, you can read very encouraging comments from the developers on what is planned for the next release. (InfoSelect is a good example of no momentum)

#2. They are not a "1 trick pony".... They have developed several award winning products. So OmeaPro should stick around for a long time. (UltraRecall is in similar situation)

#3. The developers were smart and created OP with an open API. This means users & 3rd parties can add more functionality with plugins. The key here is the installed base has to grow so 3rd party developers will have a reason to create add-ins.

#4. I believe that the current version has done alot of the "heavy lifting" (an open API, created the framework for "all information under 1 roof"...) Plus, the dbase functionality is already there (i.e. annotations to web pages.... Adding additional dbase functions (like outlining rtf notes...) is relatively easy compared to what they already done.

But for me, for now, I shall give it a miss as I am relatively happy with what I have.

And this is?????????????

ps....

I just received an email from OP with some good news....

"Thank you very much for your feedback and positive reference about our job!

The Notes functionality implementation is planned for the future major versions of Omea Pro as it is required by many users and thus it has rather high priority for us.

As for adding resources to Omea Pro. Yes, right now you are limited only to the resources which are available in Omea Pro but the range of the types of resources will be extended in the near future."

Chris,

As for something that allows me to search existing information, I'm currently using Google Desktop beta 2.

Have you tried Copernic Desktop Search????

I have been using it for over a year.

I have found it to be excellent... fast.... stable.... and I really like the built-in file viewer.

Plus it is free!

Have you tried it???

Jack,

For example, unlike both X1 and dtSearch, Copernic could not index my 50,000 + files, nor can it index the contents of Outlook PST files.

Is there a limit with Copernic??? Or does it just slow down???

I've been using Copernic for a couple of years and have indexed 40,000+ files. Am I going to need to find a new solution soon???

Also, Copernic does index Outlook email, but nothing else.

Its too bad that OmeaPro didn't just use Copernics engine.... is seems far more robust & faster!
