IDEA! does link to Outlook through simple drag’n'drop of messages, tasks etc. In fact the next release will probably have the best Outlook integration among information managers, at least re e-mail.
The logic behind IDEA! is actually quite different from other information managers that store files internally; its main benefit in my opinion is that it can link to files that remain in their original form, i.e. Word, Powerpoint, PDF or whatever, hence there’s no need for an internal viewer. As such, I think that the potential size and speed of its databases should be unmatched—though I admit that the ones I’ve created are not that big to test its performance.
Notwithstanding, IDEA! does create internal structures and hold notes, messages etc. Like Daly, I myself definitely need a hierarchical tree as a reference when organising information. IDEA!‘s trees are like Zoot’s virtual folders, i.e. the same record can be classified under various categories. In addition, a record can link to many external files; so for example, record “Amnesty International Annual Report 2005” may be linked to the main text, press release, photos and appendices; it may also be classified both under Human Rights and Non Governmental Organisations etc.
I will download Omea Pro and have a look at it; it looks very interesting as “one-stop-shop”. The only thing I didn’t like from its specifications is the requirement for a powerful processor; unfortunately, I work with various machines and they are not all latest generation ones; neither are my clients’ PCs!
