It’s been shortly discussed in the past in this list, in the context of timelining; as I recall, it’s mainly targetted to the educational community so I imagine it should be right for your specific needs.

Another program presented at the time was StoryView; it’s similar to NoteMap as an outliner, though with less levels, but it can switch to timeline view at the click of a button. Both outline and timeline views permit editing; it’s mainly targetted to script writing so it’s very flexible in terms of editing and quite limited in terms of export and presentations.
