One of the benefits, I’ve had from taking part in this forum is the understanding of the different categories of tools for information management. These tools are very different, and they are used for very different things. Therefore it will clarify things to keep the distinctions. I would suggest the following categories:
- PIMs are for management of personal information, such as addresses, mail etc. (outlook ...)
- Information managers are for keeping all the snippets of information in one place, so they are easy to find again (Zoot, ADM, UR…) Bottom level in the writing model proposed here some weeks ago.
- Outliners are for making outlines (TreePad, BrainStorm…) Middle level in the writing model.
- Word processors are for writing text. Top level in the writing model.
These are “pure” forms, or functionalities. Most real products span several of these. Not being an expert, this is my 5c, but what do you say?
