I agree. Even if a tool is useful, we need not use it. If it has some unique features that we cannot approximate with one of our current tools, then perhaps it is worthwhile…perhaps.
In the DOS days, I used GV for EVERYTHING. I even created keyboard macros to allow me to enter mathematical expressions that would print correctly. I still run Win98SE because GV is more friendly in it than in Win2000 or XP. By using just GV, I became a virtual GV virtuoso. Using several different Windows PIMs makes it difficult to become really proficient in all of them.
There are some PIMs that require Win 2000 that I would like to try, but I have almost 1,000 GV files and I am not willing to give up many of them.
I think there are two related concerns that plague almost all of us:
1) The developers of the PIMs we use may stop supporting them or may become exceedingly sloppy in their new releases (Maple, InfoSelect?).
2) Our favorite PIMs may not work properly (if at all) under a newer version of Windows. We may be able to export our “old PIM” files to something newer, but we probably will lose some data and functionality. For example, GV files can be exported to Inspiration fairly well, but all of the category/assignment info is lost.
