I basically prefer programs like ADM (used daily) or Ultra Recall (partially used for a particular project at 3M only), too. Like you Daly, I need a structure where the outliner is the basis. Further, I can’t work with an outliner or another information and knowledge management tool without metadata and keywords.
EverNote is not an outliner what I have realized rather late. It is more a note and webclipping categorization tool. I intend for using it to capture notes quickly during phone calls or meetings and to log my daily work. EverNote will never replace ADM but the electronic version of post-it notes. If I need the notes later for a project I can copy paste them to ADM. Three features make EverNotes a useful tool for me: The basic version is free, the categorization system and the Time Band.
