MS Word does indeed fit partly with Steve’s description; I am rather embarassed to say that I hadn’t noticed it.
I have actually just installed MS Office 2003; my previous version was 2000 and worked somewhat differently.
The current “Document Map” view (I assume that’s how it’s called since my menus are in Greek) opens up an outline pane at the left of the main (flat) view. The outline can be used for both navigation and initiating editing and creation of sections.
I am much less willing to qualify the Windows file system as a free form database; in fact, not even Microsoft is. One of the much advertised features of Longhorn, MS’s next 64-bit version of Windows, was the “database file system”. As it seems, this won’t be in time for Longhorn’s release so we’ll probably have to live with the current folder system plus desktop search engines for some time.
