Alex, you and Graham are correct that Brainstorm may come closest to what I’m describing (wishing for), and I hadn’t really thought about it that way.
It fails to meet my standard (my dream, ideal) in two significant ways:
1. What I would like to see in the editor (the non-aerial view in the case of BrainStorm) window is as much of the outline as I choose, flattened so that it looks like the final document. This would give me the ability to view my work holisticly while I am composing it (as opposed to organizing, structuring it). BrainStorm will only show one level at a time, and does not show the sub items.
2. The editor window in my ideal program would be a full-fledged word processor (it needn’t have tables or some of the other more sophisticated formatting functions). This is the window where the actual writing, editing, re-writing would take place. Changes made in the editor, of course, would show up in the outliner.
However, you’ve gotten me to thinking that BrainStorm could be used more effectively as a composition tool than I have used it. I’ll give it a try. Thank you.
Steve Z.
