Thank you for your response.
You are correct in that Databases do offer economies of scale when storing information and are better at compressing information. However we have found that people prefer to store their information as files, simply because they are used to storing their documents, spreadsheets etc in a similar way and because they rightly or wrongly fear the idea of having 1 data store (i.e. 1 point of failure).
BTW This is not a technical assessment of one method over another, but just a reflection of what our reasearch has shown of what people want. That is why we decided on “Livepad” and “Qwikpad” not being based around a Database at all. We insead use a “ENGINE” that sits in the background and retrieves information as and when required (Even from Livepad files that are Not Open). Therefore it is possible to Move, Rename, Copy Files and still access your required information. Also as mentioned earlier the size of the EXE is significantly smaller to download.
