Hi,

Just found a new product that might be of some interest to those who have been toying with the idea of getting OneNote, but didn't want to spend $100 (US). LivePad looks almost identical to OneNote and has many of the same features. I didn't do an extensive review, just played with it for a few minutes. Doesn't have the screen capture facility of OneNote, and doesn't live in the system tray. Some of the features are a little less sophisticated than OneNote. But it is only $40 (and, they offer a $10 discount if you buy within 5 days of downloading the trial). It is only on version 1.0, so I imagine it will be improved. The URL is

Hi,

I noticed this discussion forum about Livepad.

Let me introduce myself I am an account representative for the Livepad product at Seeplain (http://www.seeplain.com

Thank you for looking into Livepad. As you mention Livepad is a much cheaper version of similar products.

Firstly Livepad does contain a Screen Capture tool (it is called SNAP) and you access it by the Camera icon on the toolbar.

We believe there is ONE important difference that sets Livepad apart from other products. The information you store using Livepad is Completely Portable, because Livepad does NOT rely on a huge database to store information. It uses ordinary Files.

This way you can move any livepad file from PC to PC. This also makes the Livepad application small(about 5M) as compared to similar applications that have a large Database (about 70M+).

We have also just released a Smaller Version called "Qwikpad" which can be used to capture snippets of Ad Hoc Information Very Quickly, it has a Hide/Show feature which means it does not clutter your desktop.

Please let us know if you have any more questions or any feedback regarding our product I would be most happy to answer any queries.

Thanks,
Riz

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

You are correct in that Databases do offer economies of scale when storing information and are better at compressing information. However we have found that people prefer to store their information as files, simply because they are used to storing their documents, spreadsheets etc in a similar way and because they rightly or wrongly fear the idea of having 1 data store (i.e. 1 point of failure).

BTW This is not a technical assessment of one method over another, but just a reflection of what our reasearch has shown of what people want. That is why we decided on "Livepad" and "Qwikpad" not being based around a Database at all. We insead use a "ENGINE" that sits in the background and retrieves information as and when required (Even from Livepad files that are Not Open). Therefore it is possible to Move, Rename, Copy Files and still access your required information. Also as mentioned earlier the size of the EXE is significantly smaller to download.

I hope this comment is useful and expands on the comment above. Once again thank you for your insightful comment and please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,
Riz
