Graham -
Like you I use a combination of dtSearch and an organized folder system on my hard disk. X1 is now getting pretty good, but I have found dtSearch to cover the most file types - and be the most reliable - since its DOS days. This system plus Zoot seems to suit my needs very well.
The best free indexed search program IMHO is Redtree’s Wilbur, which astonishingly manages to index almost as much as dtSearch. In fact it is so good as an indexer of text that I am surprised more people don’t use it. Not fancy enough, I guess :-).
