Odd as this may sound, one of the best solutions is DTSearch. It is incredibly fast and more than anything was responsible for me dumping AskSam, beacuse I found I was more and more converting documents into AskSam simply to make them searchable.

You need something like Zoot as well for less structured data, but anything that can live in a file eg PDFs, HTML, Word documents. Iuse a carefully named hierachy of folders and DTSearch. DTSeearch will also search the Zoot files.

DTSearch is incredibly fast.
