I agree that the demise of paper is a long, long way off.
I knew the PDA was not living up to its potential when DayTimer and other paper planner companies came out with notebooks that included a pocket for the PDA. Why do you need both a paper planner with calender and contacts, and a PDA?
Of course, there is a difference between intelligent use of paper and simple wastefulness, which most of our current paper use is. At some point, we’ll be forced by resource depletion to make these choices. It would be nice if we could be proactive about it, but, at least here in the U.S., we have rarely demonstrated the ability to restrain our appetites until necessity imposes its own requirements.
I finally gave up on PDAs (after trying Psions, Pocket PCs, and Palms—talk about wastefulness!) and have switched to a small spiral planner from Franklin-Covey. The ability to add quick visual cues to entries makes it more practical and effective for me. But I only use it as a calendar. Other than a few important numbers, I keep all my contact information on my computer.
