Stephen, thanks for the “applicational approach” to InSight; indeed, presented this way, the program’s special features do make a lot more sense.
Though InSight as a program has not been specifically targetted to programmers, its marketing approach appears that way, probably because it has been written by a programmer in the first place!
Nevertheless, it is worth noting that programmers’ tools have, for quite some time, been offering functionality that could be extremely valuable to other professions, such as writers. Powerful regular expressions for finding/replacing text is such a feature. See, for example, TextPad’s feature list:

At the “manuscript level” I also strongly prefer plain text to RTF; that’s why I am more than happy with Brainstorm. However, InSight might be more suitable for working with large chunks of text, after they have been “Brainstormed” or collected from various sources. Finally, one could turn to a tool like StoryView for a more structured approach after the main material has been edited.
