> Derek: What are you using as a substitute for Grandview these days?
For lighter outlining, I use BrainStorm, which is a wonderful program, with its own quirks. When I need real outlining power, I use NoteMap. But as you point out, NoteMap is not nearly as powerful as GrandView. One of the features it lacks, as was pointed out by Stephen Diamond, is the ability to treat text as text; that is, every piece of text is a heading in NoteMap. With GrandView, you can have text that is associated with a heading and travels with it when you move it around in your outline. You can make this text visible in the outline or hide it in the outline, and you can open it in its very own editor… to me, this flexibility is what made GV such a powerful writing tool. The meta-data features made it a strong PIM. The two things together made it unique.
So, the real answer to your question is there is no substitute for GrandView. I have it installed on my PC, but rarely use it because the screen behavior is somewhat irregular, and I am not good at shifting from the Windows world to the DOS world. Perhaps I should put more effort into making it work, however.
