Today I downloaded and tested another organizational tool: the Wiki. This one is called Didiwiki. http://didiwiki.org/ I downloaded and installed it on a Linux machine. but it should also work on an OS X Mac.

In brief, it is a home wiki server engine. And what does a wiki do? -- allow you to set up your own hypertext, with both internal and external links. The interface is through your web browser. Editing commands are a vastly simplified, but pretty good looking, version of HTML.

It took about 10 minutes to get comfortable with the editing commands. the Wiki has been used for all kinds of Open Source knowledge gathering, the Wikipedia being the best example.

But having come from the outlining world, and lately in the realm of mind mapping, I find Wikis too unstructured. Yes, it's easy enough to make links, but hard to keep the pattern of the links in your head.

Has anybody else wikied? What do you think of it as a personal information tool?

I've tried a few wiki-type programs for Windows and had the same reaction you did... that it is not a great way to manage information because it is too free form and has virtually no structure.

I went back to check on a couple of these programs and maybe it isn't surprising that neither is being further developed.
