I think I first started with outliners in 1984 (ThinkTank)and since then I’ve been through MaxThink, Ready!, GrandView, Framework, PC Outline ... and quite a few others I can’t even recall. Still use PC Outline once in a while, and will be giving ThinkTank another bash too (now that I’ve got a version that doesn’t require me to insert a disk to get it going! <smirk>. I stayed in the DOS world for a l-o-n-g time but must admit that Windows has its attractions (like not having to configure printers for each and every app.
A big thanks to Symantec for making ThinkTank available once again.
Those of you that are looking for a (relatively compact) Windows outliner might want to take a look at VisiMap ( the UK web site is at <http://www.coco.co.uk> and I think there is a U.S. mirror site too).
VisiMap doesn’t actually push the fact that it is an outliner - but rather that it enables one to build Mind Maps (I guess you could call them “spatially centric outlines”?) But you can toggle between the graphic presentation and the more familiar linear outline view very easily. The full version of VisiMap (as opposed to the “Lite” version) also allows export in .rtf format (as well as Microsoft Project Planner format). Note well that you really do need the “full” version - the “lite” version doesn’t have export capabilities. You can download a thirty-day trial version off their site.
I find it very useful - every bit as useful as ThinkTank, MaxThink and PC Outline were when I still lived in a DOS world. That having been said, it does have its irritations (Win 3.1 file naming conventions (8.3) being one). The ability to export into HTML would be another nice-to-have, although one can go .rtf -> .doc -> .htm if you want to.
Usual disclaimer: I have no connection with CoCo Systems (publishers of VisiMap) - I just think it’s a Neat Product in the evolution of outliners.
