> Steve Z.: Sometimes I think I would be happier (and definitely more effective) if I were constrained to just one tool… Zoot or Brainstorm, maybe… and forbidden to use any others. But that wouldn’t be any fun, would it?
A few days ago a friend who is involved in the organisation of an ecological film festival ( http://www.ecocinema.gr/ ) called to ask for help; she had around 300 high resolution images sent to her from the various participants that had to be reduced in size to be entered into the website. I invited her home, loaded the images to my PC, launched IrfanView, experimented a bit with resolutions and started Batch Conversion. The images were all ready in 10’. Suffice it to say that Batch Conversion is just about the only thing I use IrfanView for, but for that it’s absolutely indispensable.
Most of my computer aware friends would have gone looking for a copy of Photoshop and expect to spend a couple of 12-hour days on the job.
Adapting Pareto’s principle I’d say that 20% of our tools can effectively get about 80% of our jobs done. On the other hand, I know I’ve spent about 80% of my software researching time on programs that will—at best- only do 20% of the jobs.
But, as the above situation demonstrates, sometimes it’s worth it. And it’s also, as you note, fun.
