I know you’re familiar with ECCO. Have you considered it for this step? I don’t have any experience using the workgroup functions, so don’t know how well they work, but it may be worth checking out, especially since it’s free. It certainly provides robust calendaring of date related tasks. You can even build modest Gantt charts.
