[Steve Z.: I think this technology needs to be improved before it will be embraced by end users.]
It appears that, for the moment, .NET is to programmers what PowerPoint is to presenters; as in PP, the audience / users are not necessarily happy.
It should be said that the average PC already has vastly more processing power than what is required for everyday office applications; in the long term, even .NET applications will not seem slow in newer machines.
There are good arguments for the .NET approach; for one, the end-users are being spoilt into expecting numerous “standard” features that are extremely complicated to program the traditional way. A Brainstorm based on the .NET framework might be slower than the Brainstorm we have come to love—but it would be a much more accessible product to the average buyer.

Though many programmers still debate the relative merits and faults of competing development frameworks like Java and .NET, most agree that Microsoft’s maturing, language-neutral .NET can dramatically simplify the creation and integration of robust Web services.
