I seem to recall that ACT! was once published by Symantec, but it is now produced by a company called Best Software. Perhaps this explains why they migrated the program to the .NET framework—they no longer have the advantages of a vast programming team. I found the following comments on the company’s web site in a longer response to their customers’ concerns regarding this migration:
“While the new platform offers extensive benefits over our former product architecture, there are some short-term performance trade-offs that are inherent to .NET. Some users may experience slower performance than ACT! 6.0 in performing some functions and others may notice some differences in functionality, most of which were necessary to optimize the application for .NET and a relational database back-end.”
The contact manager published by Intuit as part of their QuickBooks line is also built around the .NET framework, and it is sluggish to say the least. I think this technology needs to be improved before it will be embraced by end users.
