I must confess that my initial enthusiasm for UR has eroded. I love how easily (if a bit slowly) UR absorbs and catalogs web pages and e-mails. But like all the tree-based PIMs, the tree gets cluttered so quickly, it becomes a bit of a quagmire. This is compounded by the poor way UR handles multiple files, which discourages breaking your information into multiple databases.
I have found MyInfo 3.0 is much easier for me to use. The new tab interface keeps different databases (what they are now calling topics) quickly accessible. It has customizable meta-data fields, and does a nice job creating links to external files. It still needs to add a cross-topic search and cloning capability, and I don’t know if that is ever going to happen.
It seems to me that what these tree-based PIMS need is a function that allows you to create a quickly accessible hoist to any topic in the tree… setting it up so these hoists are tabs perhaps. That way you can keep all your information in one file, but with the same effect as separate files… i.e. clicking the hoist tab shows you just the topic with its subtopics you are interested in.
