At least, the idea of straightforwardly “turning” an outline into a piece of writing is probably a mistaken one - though something that the software encourages.

I am sure this is the case, but I think this problem is most likely worse in a two-pane outliner than in a single-pane, because a single-pane produces a more holistic, “word processor” environment; whereas the two-pane approach really chops your writing into discrete packets.
