For people working in a corporate environnment, an interesting new tool is worth mentioning; Altova MapForce.
I copy below the basic description from the company’s website
http://www.altova.com/features_database_mapforce.html
“The majority of business data today is stored in relational databases, due to their efficiency, simplicity, and cost effectiveness. However, despite the advantages of the relational database model, the proprietary, non-object oriented nature of relational databases has made integration with e-business applications difficult and costly.
MapForce® 2005 Enterprise Edition is the first general purpose data integration tool to support all major relational databases, allowing data architects to develop visual mappings to integrate database, XML, flat file, and EDI data easily and cost effectively. MapForce® 2005 supports the following relational databases: Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, IBM DB2, Sybase, any ADO/ODBC database.”
In short, MapForce uses XML to integrate management and access to all sorts of data within an organisation. Given that most Document Management Systems and ERP software are based on some kind of SQL database, this kind of tool can provide a meaningful view to company knowledge.
Other software can do similar things, like TheBrain EKP (Enterprise Knowledge Platform) but this is custom-built and provided to each customer organisation. MapForce is a development environment that may be used by even smaller organisations to bring some logic to the info management chaos.
