I used NoteMap v2 for a while for a big project I was doing recently. Two problems decided me to switch to Word’s outliner. The first was that NoteMap’s marginal “Comments” (they are attached to individual Notes) do not always survive the merging of Notes. (The Note being merged loses its Comment). As I was using them to store information for later footnotes, this was very inconvenient.

The second issue was that of footnotes per se. I needed to be able to create footnotes for the outline items as I went along. Word allows this (as does NotaBene - which I also used on the project until I lost data through some failed “saves”). Possibly Wordperfect does, too (I haven’t looked yet). This may be an arcane academic requirement - but it is useful, and probably only exists where the outliner is integrated into a word-processor.
