Graham,
Well, don’t confuse me with someone who actually knows what he’s talking about… concept mapping, mind mapping, diagramming… it’s kind of all the same to me. What I tend to focus on is how easy and functional the application is. The Inspiration documentation says that you can do idea mapping, concept mapping, storyboarding and web mapping with the application. A look at the example of what they mean by a concept map shows a diagram that is fairly complicated, with various labeled links connecting multi-level items that have been carefully arranged… this would be my problem… add something to your diagram and it will require a major restructuring of your layout. Maybe they should allow you to lock current items in place, and only unlock specific items that need to be updated or changed, so you don’t have to rebuild your diagram each time you make additions.
But, as I admitted, this may just be a limitation of the type of application. I think this is why I prefer Freemind for displaying outlines visually—I can understand your objection to confusing an outline (hierarchical information) with a concept map (relational information). But to me, simpler is better.
BTW, a new application that I recently came across called Mind Pad looks sort of interesting.
I am not recommending it, because I haven’t even tried it yet, but it seems, if I’ve read their site correctly, to offer custom meta-data for each item in the map.
