I see your point… it seems unlikely that a two-pane outliner that provided one-pane outlining in its item editor would be able to store other types of data.

The closest I’ve seen to achieving this is InfoRapid, which comes close to this idea, but I found it to be unreliable. There have been no updates in a year, so I don’t know if it is a living, breathing product or not. But when it worked properly, you could “switch” a button that opened an MS Office document right in its editor. I guess this was some kind of OLE magic, but, as I said, it wasn’t very stable in my experience.
