Yes, the specific example certainly requires a level of review and possible manual manipulation, but the main idea was to be able to tag (with a “keyword”) certain elements at any level, be it page/message or line/paragraph and then pull together items that match those tags into their own view that is also linked back to the original context.
I don’t think you can escape some level of mental work with any tool. I am not looking to completely eliminate the thinking required about incoming data, but simply to reduce the friction that can result trying to make a tool faithfully represent or capture the results of the mental work. I like the sort of unobtrusive “helpers” that something like BrainStorm’s namesakes provide: the software is doing a little bit of the gluing together for me.
