3 is intentional. We used the alert sound when appropriate (in the context of an Alert window). The little “ouch” sound is like a subtle tap on the shoulder, saying you’ve reached a limit. The alert sound is more like a quick punch in the the gut. Have you worked with Windows at all? There’s a default sound, Chord.wav, that gets used far too often. There’s something really unsettling about typing the wrong key and having Gabriel’s Horn blare forth. At least until you go to the control panel and disable it.
Unfortunately, however, with changes in the sound manager, “ouch” lost some of its character.
