In those terms, by far the best tools I’ve found for outlining are Brainstorm and Freemind together.

For information management, I’m still looking, as I want to combine various types of information i.e. text, numerical, images etc. However, visually mapping information is very important to me as I find context more important than searchability. So, personally, I opt for a convertible!
