[Stephen D.: The two-pane format might appeal to numerous people because it carries on its face the text-heading demarcation.]
It does appeal for that reason indeed, to me at least. I can start with a rough abstract outline of what I want to create and then keep adding information without losing sight of the greater picture. At some point, as I move into the details of what I have actually gathered, the outline might change i.e. a sub-section might prove significant enough to become a separate section or vice versa.
I think this kind of feedback is the reason that many of us are looking for a universal tool, i.e. both information manager and outliner as a creativity aid. Dedicated information managers like Zoot might be very useful as repositories of huge amounts of information but for me, at least, context is more important than quantity.
For example, I’ve used dBase and then Access for my contacts for ages, but at some point the form / list views were not much help. Now I have included the contacts data, within context, in my hierarchical infobase along with the related project notes; I find it far more useful, even though the contact info is now stored in RTF format so I don’t have fields with the ability to mail merge etc (yet).
