One of the tangible effects of this that I’ve noticed has to do with functionality of editors. Virtually every PIM that I’ve tried that has an advanced editor—i.e. tables, complex bulleting and number of paragraphs, etc.—has lost its ability to do enhanced selection of text. I suspect this is because the few people building these packaged editors are not themselves writers, and have just never thought about it. This was all but confirmed when the developer of The Journal, who just upgraded the program to a new, “more powerful” editor, said that he had bought the new controls from a third party. However, he went in, tinkered with the code, and added three-click selection of paragraphs, albeit in a less than orthodox way.
