I still believe there is a severe drawback to both the outlining model and the keyword model; namely, that you need to decide at the time you create your information how to categorize it. For instance, in your Chimpanzee example, Stephen, you would be hard pressed to find Chimpanzee if you suddenly needed to know which animals eat bananas. The number of ways information can be cataloged and cross-referenced can be huge. I don’t have time to do that kind of categorization at the time I’m collecting the information. That’s one of the reasons I find Zoot so indespensible. I can just suck the info into Zoot and months later I can set up a smart folder to find all the information about animals that eat bananas. I’m sure this is doable in most programs through string searches limited to certain keywords, but it doesn’t seem as easy. With Zoot that information stays in the smart folder until you don’t need it anymore. This isn’t a commercial for Zoot, but just an example of how I believe the best information processors don’t force a categorization scheme on you if you don’t have the time to commit to that process.
