Stephen, I have never used undo much except in wp programs. When I have outlined complex projects what I tend to do when I change my mind is to create subordinate topics for two or more variations so that I keep them in front of me as I work with them. I tend to be very visually oriented, and this approach works best for me.
I haven’t done any book length documents, but certainly have prepared complex, multi-section papers of some length. I am still unclear on your distinctions re pure knowledge organizers, etc., but would say that what I need is a strong outliner (even if it doesn’t have multiple undo’s), a data/information handling capability, and ideally a calendar/task scheme for that I can plan the various phases and time implications of such a project.
Re Grandview: I wouldn’t describe my perspective as “excessively agnostic” (although I chuckled at the as I read it), so much as recognizing the limits of my ability to make a knowledgable judgement b/c of my lack of familiarity with the product. However, based on what GV users have said here, I would assume it to be a very strong and flexible outliner (even without undo) that incorporated some hood data features. Re why it failed in the end, it seems based on what was said here a few posts ago, and previously in other venues, that it was primarily a marketing judgement on Symantec’s part based more or less on an estimate of Microsoft’s inluence in the marketplace.
I think we agree on the question of eronomic level of a program cf its learning curve.
Re the two questions:
I don’t know my exact typing speed, but I am a touch typer, and can move fast enough to brainstorm effectively.
I do not use Zoot b/c I am scared of the learning curve. As well, the ability to format text is important to me. No doubt it has a lot of power, and the ability to have smart folders is a plus. I am not sure how I would use all that power As well, the program is not very appealing visually, which is an important factor for me, and since it is only 16-bit there’s some question about whether it will work when Longhorn breaks free (albeit years late) from the Seattle corral.
What’s your experience with Zoot?
OMEA Pro, which I wrote about last night, has some of Zoot’s smart folder capabilities, automatically categorizing items as today, yesterday, 1 week ago, etc.
Are you familiar with either OMEA Pro or Knowledge Workshop? If so, what are your thoughts on them? It seems to me KW is similar to Ultra Recall in ways.
