At least four Windows tree-outliners currently offer cloning or its equivalent: UltraRecall, MyInfo, Idea!, and ADM. This appears to be the feature that defines the leading edge tree outliner development.
The cloning feature is implemented in its positionng of the clone in these programs in one of three ways. 1) My Info and ADM allow clones to be positioned as children of any items that aren’t children of the clone’s target; 2) Ultra-Recall allows clone’s to be placed as children of any items, without the limitation of 1; 3) Idea! uses a separate outline structure for keywords, so the issue separating class 1 and class 2 doesn’t arise.
Idea!‘s approach is most consistent with current library science work on faceted classification, but it is possible that other approaches are better when the assumptions of the facet model. The most important constraints arethat the facets be independent and the traits pertaining to each facet be exhaustive and mutually exclusive. Another question is whether Ultra-Recall’s greater liberality results in chaos or better models.
