I’ve found MindGenius to be a good tool, more versatile than MindManager; it can present the initial scheme as any of a number of diagrams (mind map, affinity, hierarchical etc) and it outputs to MS Word, Powerpoint, Project as well as HTML, XML and image formats. It can also export “actions” to Outlook which you (Jack) will probably like. The business MindManager versions do similar things but at higher prices. Also, MindGenius gives you a free additional (home) license for each you purchase.
What eventually drove me personally away from these mind map programs was their limitation to depth. MindGenius supports a maximum of 10 levels as far as I recall; MindManager ditto or less. Even those 10 levels are very hard to look at and maneuver on a PC screen.
By contrast, FreeMind—an open source project as its name suggests- seems to have no limits and uses screen space much more efficiently. It has less bells and whistles than its commercial counterparts but I find it more effective. It recognises tabbed levels so it can easily display a copied/pasted outline as a map.
