TakeNote! by Academix software, a biblio-type program intended for university students, has also been very helpful to me for some writing projects. It combines the card metaphor with a very simple outline, as well as keeping track of sources, and providing references according to some of the major styles (APA, MLA, etc.).
TakeNote! permits a split screen so you can have, for example, your cards view on the left, and outline view on the right. This arrangement simplifies dragging desired cards into the outline. It is also possible to have several cards open at one time, a handy feature for writers. Cards can be assigned one or more keywrods. I have found that TakeNote!‘s elegance is a function of its simplicity and intuitive interface.
