Thanks for the url for Onespins, Alex. I’ve been looking for the free version for some time. {Incidentally, if people find that the url crashes their IE v6.0, try Firefox; it worked for me…).

I have been testing various of X1’s betas for some time. They have made some rapid improvements over the last year, and the most recent versions - betas at any rate - will search for exact phrases and do proximity searches. It is really approaching the utility of good old Lotus Magellan now for searching - a goal the developers have, I believe.

Only problem from my point of view is that it still has some problems with pdf files, as do almost all indexed searchers - i.e. can’t handle “image” pdf files, and has problems with locked ones. But thankfully these are only a small proportion of the pdf files on the web.

People tell me that the only solution for this problem is to use an optical character recognition program to extract text from the pdf progam first, and then index that…
