What do people here use for a quick outlining job? E.g. sketching out the elements of a project plan.

BrainStorm (www.BrainStormSW.com). The most ergonomic outliner.

I would also recommend BrainStorm very highly. In fact, it is perfect for exactly the kind of work you describe. I use it continually to start projects, think them through, and organize the process. If you are unfamiliar with BrainStorm, you may not recognize it as an outliner at first. It has a deceptively simple looking interface, and packs few frills... but it is very powerful.

While BrainStorm is great for organizing a project, I don't think it is a strong tool for managing a project... that is capturing lots of various kinds of data, and reporting.

I too use Brainstorm and copy/paste the model to Freemind which gives me a Mind Map of the whole model. I used to start the other way around (mindmapping first) but it seems that my brain does not work that way!

For strictly outlining jobs I use Mybase; it's great for gathering information from the web and hatd disk; it also has good web publishing / presentation features to share information with others.

Last but not least, for project management in particular I use Hyperclip for its ability to find To-Do's etc regardless of hierarchy.

I have ended up with a mix of programs, taking advantage of each one's respective strengths; a key point is that I try to avoid redundancy, i.e. overlapping of uses and information stored.
