Steve,
I’m probably as transplatform as you get, but I lag way behind most of the participants in this discussion in their (your) ability to articulate in detail what characterizes and distinguishes these programs. I was a passionate Grandview user, eventually migrating to InfoSelect until the upgrades killed the simplicity which was to me its primary virtue. I used NoteMap extensively a few years ago when I was in a PC environment, and would do so again if it were appropriate.
Compared to these, Omni is elegant, like NoteMap, but more fluid. It supports hoist in a convenient, graceful way, but its implementation of the mark and gather twins leaves a lot to be desired, and you have to be careful with using the various forcing commands at anything beyond the basic level. Its use of columns is extremely useful to my purposes although it is only moderately sophisticated.
unfortunately, at the end of the day, as with all good outliners, you are left with an enormous amount of work to do, albeit very well laid out.
