One way outliners increase their usability is by allowing customization of keyboard shortcuts. If ever it was desirable to do everything from the keyboard, in outlining I think it is particularly true. This is one area where NoteMap excels, with customization of shortcuts for everything.

But is it necessary that the outlining _application_ provide the customization. Since the user may want to impose a uniform keyboard scheme on all programs, customization by the keyboard really should be provided by the operating system. Having no control over that, the second best alternative is to have a macro program to accomplish this.

On the Macintosh OS 9, a program called Quickeys allowed the user to assign any key to anything anywhere. Do similar programs exist on Windows XP? I have come across various macro programs, but they seem much more limited. For example, in Quickeys you had both system wide and application specific macros. Does anyone use a macro program to assign shortcuts in outlining, and if so, which program?

Speaking of the Macintosh, I lack experience with OS X, but I’m aware of various outlining programs and outline-based pims. The main outliner appears to be OmniOutliner. The leading pims which use a lot of outlining include Circus Ponies Notebook, Aquaminds Notetaker, and Hog Bay Notebook. Has anyone used any of these programs enough to compare them to Windows offerings?
