I agree with Daly’s assessment of the outliner being—well, I guess I wouldn’t say obsolete, but overly cumbersome once you reach a certain data saturation point. It is another issue with clutter, a cluttered tree. It would be nice if the tree structure were optional, so that you could make use of it when needed to organize subsets of your data, but that it was not the fundamental structure of your database (I guess that’s one of the things Idea! does, right?). Zoot works this way somewhat. Of course, talk about a cluttered interface! What mitigates Zoot’s clutter somewhat for me is that it is highly customizable… so I can minimize each of the three panes if not needed… stretch the grid to full width… whatever. Still, operating Zoot sometimes feels like alchemy.
